Frequently Asked Questions: Carbon Guitars (FAQ)

Q. Is the entire guitar Carbon Fiber?
A. Yes – the body, neck, bridge, fretboard, and bracing.

Q. What is the material of the back and sides of the body?
A. It is a propriety blend of carbon fiber.

Q. Is there a Truss Rod?
A. Yes, it is a non adjustable truss rod. Adjustments are not needed because Carbon Fiber material does not move like wood.

Q. What type are strings are used and can I install other strings?
A. The guitars are set up with Elixir Nano Web Medium gauge strings. We recommend them as they last the longest and our guitars are voiced off of them. Yes, you can install other strings.

Q. Can I order the guitar without electronics?
A. Yes.

Q. Can I change the electronics?
A. Yes, most any pickup can be installed.

Q. Does the Sable come in other colors?
A. No, at this time it does not.

Q. What action are the guitars set up when they are shipped?
A. Your McPherson Guitar comes with a medium action saddle installed,
as well as an alternate, low action saddle. Each saddle is made specifically for your guitar.

Q. Why a patented Compensated TUSQ nut and saddle?
A. Our patented compensated nut and saddle improve the playability by correctly setting each strings intonation to help produce the best tone and performance possible.

Q. What is TUSQ made of?
A. TUSQ is a proprietary material which is precision engineered under high pressure and heat. It is specifically formulated to deliver the right frequencies with the optimum transfer rate to the top of your guitar every time. Because of the way TUSQ is made, it is a consistent material that is rich in tone and harmonic content.

Q. How is TUSQ different from any other material (bone, micarta, and corian) used in nuts and saddles?
A. TUSQ is a very resonant material. This resonance alone will give you a very full and deep sound that will amplify your tone to a whole new level. Secondly, it’s a consistent material, allowing every note you play to sound just as clear and full as the next. In comparison, bone has natural grains which cause dead spots. These dead spots damp balance in tone and harmonic content. Micarta is made partially from linen and paper scraps which makes it hard to work with while corian is nice to work with but also damps sound.

Frequently Asked Questions: Custom Guitars (FAQ)

Q: Can you tell me the sound difference between the Camrielle and the MG?
A: In general the MG’s larger body provides more low end and volume while the Camrielle has more mid range and punch. However, these tonal characteristics can be manipulated by altering body depth and tonewoods.

Q: What type of guitar polish should I use on my McPherson?
A: Any dedicated guitar or instrument polish will be fine on your McPherson. Do not use wax.

Q: What type of strings should I use on my McPherson?
A: We recommend medium gauge (13-56) strings. The higher tension will activate the top to its fullest potential.

Q: Can I buy new bridge saddles for my guitar? What are the saddles made of?
A: Each guitar is shipped with three custom intonated saddles (Low, Med and High), made of cattle bone. They should not be used in any other McPherson. Replacement saddles would have to be hand made at our shop or by a competent Luthier.

Q: What model do you recommend for bluegrass style music?
A: Most bluegrass players prefer the classic combination of Indian Rosewood/Adirondack Red Spruce. McPherson suggests a MG 4.5XP Rosewood(Indian or Madagascar) with an Adirondack Red Spurce top.

Q: What guitar do you recommend for fingerstyle playing?
A: The MG 4.5 with Indian Rosewood back/sides and a Redwood top will provide a warm tone full of complex overtones and sustain.

Want to test drive the Touring and Sable? Want to learn more about our guitars? Then join us at Gruhn Guitars, Nashville, TN on September 22, 2016 from 4:30PM until 6:30PM. John De Hoyos will be performing and McPherson representatives will be available to answer all your questions.

After years of constant practice (eventually with six strings) he became heavily involved in the San Francisco blues scene and, by the age of eighteen, was opening for west coast mainstays like Clearance Gatemouth Brown and Robben Ford.

Deciding that he could move his career along faster with a move to Los Angeles, John soon became involved in network television and feature film soundtracks, composing music on guitar, bass and banjo for projects including Universal’s Spiderman 3, HDNet’s Dan Rather Reports, Animal Planet’s If I Ran a Zoo and Agora Entertainment’s The Final.

During this time, John became enamored with the acoustic guitar and began touring the U.S. and many foreign countries honing his skills as a solo acoustic entertainer, garnering accolades wherever he performed. In 2007, John became the only artist ever to perform for the American Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan while working with journalist Dan Rather.

John has artist endorsement contracts with prestigious brands McPherson Guitars, LR Baggs, Fishman electronics, GHS Strings, Shubb Kapos, and Westone Professional Music Products. He performs with and represents their products wherever he goes.

McPherson 12 String

Over the years our guitars have been described using phrases like “it sounds huge” or “it sounds like a 12 string.” We have just stepped up to the plate to offer a guitar that eclipses even the sound of our six string models; it is the new McPherson 12 string. The addition of six strings to an already huge sounding guitar is nothing less than stunning. While debuting the 12 string at the 2010 NAMM show in Anaheim CA, the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Player after player emerged from our sound proof booth with the 12 string in hand shaking their heads describing the sound as incredible.

Applying our innovative bracing, cantilevered neck and soundhole design to our 12 string has created a monster sounding guitar unlike anything you’ve heard before. The crystal clear highs and booming lows of our 12 string guitars are nothing short of amazing.

Look for our new 12 strings on tour with Carrie Underwood, Julianne Hough and Peter Cetera as well as at a McPherson Dealer near you.
